Why do people create graphic memoirs?
ReplyDeleteHow do logos, pathos, and ethos help photo essayists make their point?
Graphic memoirs are first and foremost memoirs, memoirs tell true stories of someone’s life and experiences. Memoir comes from the French word memoire, meaning memory. Memoirs look at the past analyzing and asking questions of moments in the authors life. Memoirs purpose of sharing their stories are to help others gain insights into their lives. Graphic memoirs serve the same purpose; however, they differ in the fact that they include photos. Graphic memoirs “focus on transporting the reader to a world that is very different to everyday reality” (67), and do so by immersing the reader through pictures.
DeleteLogos, Pathos, and Ethos give photos their power. The photos described in Bedford Book of Genres, of girls who were burned by acid, emphasize Pathos, as the reader emphasizes emotionally with the victims as we feel strong emotions seeing the photos. The photos also exhibit Logos, as we trust that the photographer knows why to share the photos, to call attention the travesty shown.
How can we use the rhetorical appeals, ethos specifically, in our essay for class?
ReplyDeleteHow can we get readers to personally connect with our stories?
I don't think you necessarily need to use all three rhetorical appeals throughout your essay but I.T also doesn't hurt. I find the usage of all three to be relative depending on the topic as well as how persuasive you intend to come off as. Ethos, specifically, I think should be used at the introduction or at least in the beginning. This is when you, as a writer or as a persuader, should attempt to establish your credibility on the topic. As for your second question, how to create a connection depends on both yourself and on the intended audience. Using a personal story would create a more intimate connection and would also use the pathos rhetorical appeal.
Delete1. When analyzing a narrative, should the purpose be narrowed down to just one?
ReplyDelete2. Should Photo Essay include captions or excerpts?
I don't believe when analyzing a narrative that the purpose needs to be narrowed down to just one thing. Although there may be one main story or lesson given within a narrative there are most likely still other elements that are within one story. I think when analyzing a narrative readers will focus on the purpose that relates the most closely to them personally. However, there can be multiple purposes analyzed when reading a narrative.
DeleteI believe captions are more effective in a photo essay. I think captions draw more attention to the photo than excerpts and make readers analyze it more because captions are usually connected to a photo while excerpts are within the passage. Usually captions directly explain the photo which readers will read and then begin to analyze the photo and have a better understanding of why it was put within the passage
1.When analyzing a narrative, the purpose does not need to be narrowed down to just one- but it can just as easily be if chosen to do so. A narrative may include various purposes and the reader may choose to analyze all of them as a collection, or focus on one that calls their attention the most or even the most controversial/conflicting one to become a more interesting analyzation. I believe that it is left up to the person to decide, so the answer would be that although you may choose to focus on only one purpose, that is not a rule.
Delete2. Once again, although it may be helpful captions may not be needed on photo essays. Captions may tie in some loose ends that the picture can not do by itself, but it could also be left up to personal interpretation.
What are the differences in design or formatting for a nonfiction and a fiction story?
ReplyDeleteCould use all the rhetorical appeals in one piece of writing and is it more effective?
Do you believe a memoir or narrative would be more effective in writing a serious historical story?
ReplyDeleteHow/why do visual photos attract audiences to a story?
I believe that memoirs and narratives are equally as effective for writing a historical story, given that the two are so closely related. The word narrative is actually in the definition of memoir. Both of these have very effective rhetorical conventions and appeals to write a great historical story.
DeleteVisual photos attract audiences for multiple reasons. The first reason being that they act as almost a preview. Before reading a magazine or newspaper the first thing most people do is look at either the headlines or pictures in the composition. A cool picture at the top of an article will often encourage us to read it. The second being that they are quite simply aesthetically pleasing. A long composition full of complex words can be challenging to read and intimidating. A few pictures in between paragraphs can act as a break from tough reading. The third reason is pictures can often tell stories that words may not be able to fully describe.
I would think that both a memoir and a narrative would be extremely effective when writing a historical story. Since both have to do with true stories that have been spoken or written. I think that a narrative would be more useful in capturing the full story of a historical context rather than a memoir. This is because a memoir is a personal experience of a certain historical event. Visual photos could have an interesting visual that came from the story that makes you want to read it. Also we know that we can use the photo they give us as an indication to what the book may be about.
DeleteI think Memoirs and narratives are a very effective way of explaining the past. What's more real than someone who actually lived in the moment to tell what happened. This is one reason why a memoir would be better. The one problem with memoirs are that they only tell one side of the story. Narratives like Dalton said are the same as memoirs so both share the same strengths and weaknesses.
DeleteAs for visuals in writing attract readers easier for one reason is because of the use of color. black and white on a page can be very plain and boring but with a colored picture. Readers will usually gravitate to the visuals. Pictures just also stand out more in long texts. same goes for picture books or museums, people tend to read less and look more at the pictures or exhibits.
1. Do you need all 3 rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos and logos) in your writing or is it relative to each?
ReplyDelete2. What is the best way to grab your reader's attention?
You do not need to include all 3 rhetorical appeals in every piece of writing. In order to decide what rhetorical appeals need to be included, you must think about what your subject matter is and what you are trying to tell your audience. Each rhetorical appeal has a different purpose. For example, if you are trying to connect with you audience then you would use pathos in order invoke an emotional response. You could use more than one rhetorical appeal in your article to make it stronger, but you do not have to.
DeleteThe best way to grab your reader's attention is to show them something that they would be interested in. If you know your audience, then you would know if they want graphics and pictures included in your writing. These things could grab your audience's attention before they even start reading. The way your writing is designed could also help to grab your reader's attention.
What are some genre conventions for a literacy memoir?
ReplyDeleteIs pathos more effective in a specific genre?
1. Memoirs are based on the authors' memories, so they are often written in a first person perspective. Because of this closer view, common elements of memoirs include the sharing of personal thoughts, emotions, and intimate details. This level of trust is also seen in the dialogue and characters, as memoirists incorporate real people and encounters in their work. Other genre conventions usually include anecdotes told by the author and an overall truth (or atleast the author's truth) to the story being told.
Delete2. Pathos is used to appeal to an audience's emotions, which I think can go a long way in the fiction genre. By creating a story that appeals to people's emotions, readers feel more attached and can relate to the story. Another genre that pathos would prove effective in is memoirs. If an authors writes about an emotional moment in their life and stresses its significance, then readers are more likely to identify with that experience emotionally.
1.How can you make your stories relatable?
ReplyDelete2. In what ways can you use pathos to strengthen your argument?
To connect to you audience first you need to know who you are writing for. Learn who you audience is and work to connect to them. Secondly you need to write how you talk. Make your work sound personal, make the people feel like you're a real person and help them connect to you.
DeletePathos can strengthen your argument because they help you connect to the reader. The sadness and pity the the pathos portrays gives you a sense of realism and allows the reader to connect to you.
Using pathos in your writings is a strong way to make the piece relatable and understandable. Pathos can be developed in an essay easily and sometimes without even trying to do so. Pathos is one of the easier choices to use out of ethos, pathos, and logos. Using emotion in your writing gives a sentimental feel and gives the audience more knowledge about the writer. It is good to have emotion in your writing whether it is happy or sad. Using pathos gives the audience more feelings and makes them feel more attached to the work as a whole.
Delete1. Do photo essays and graphic memoirs have potential to reach more widespread audiences than their literary counterparts?
ReplyDelete2. Are graphic memoirs and photo essays part of a sub-genre, or do they make up their own?
1. What is the most used rhetorical appeal when trying to promote a product?
ReplyDelete2. What is a good way to get a reader to connect to a story?
The most used rhetorical appeal for promoting a product would be pathos. Many advertisements try to appeal to the audiences emotions and create sympathy. For example, many pharmaceutical companies promote their drug with the message displaying how the drug helps people get back to normal. The company wants the audience to sympathize with the characters who have some illness or disease that degrades their quality of life. The drug is portrayed as a savior for these people, emphasizing its importance.
DeleteA good way to connect a reader to a story can be through the use of the rhetorical appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. Ethos is used to display the narrator's authority in regards to the topic being discussed. This is done to create reliability for the narrator, so the reader knows they can trust what the narrator is saying. Logos is the use of logic to connect certain points which makes sense to the reader. Pathos is the use of emotional appeals to appeal to the reader and create a connection for the reader to the story.
1. Can the differences between genres be narrowed down to uses of ethos logos and pathos?
ReplyDelete2. Does the author's purpose usually align with what the audience perceives it to be?
1. Are particular modes better for the delivery of compositions of certain genres?
ReplyDelete2. How important is one's audiences when deciding which rhetorical appeals to use?
Certain modes I think make the genre more accessible for everyone for example, a movie or tv show are easier to access and understand then a book sometimes. This is because is a book sometimes dialogue and tone are left open for your own interpretation but when in a movie and you can see and hear an actor playing the role is makes it much clearer what is going on in the scene.
Deleteones audience is the most important because you want to appeal to your audience and make them enjoy and feel comfortable with what you're giving them. If they don't understand or don't like what they're interacting with their is no hope that they will recomend it to others and no hope of your media becoming more popular.
1. Yes, this is because certain aspects of modes can be enhanced to add to that genre. For example, horror stories are a lot more effective in movie when compared to books because it allows the creator to add things like suspenseful music and loud sounds. These things often scare or startle the viewer making the horror aspect more effective.
Delete2. Your audience is extremely important when deciding which rhetorical tools you should use. For example, if you know that you are creating something for a younger audience, your rhetoric should be easy to understand and follow. On the other hand, pieces should include advance and clever rhetoric when appealing to an older audience to keep them interested.
1. Can you use pathos ethos and logos outside of writing?
ReplyDelete2. If you choose the wrong mode or medium for your writing will the audience still understand the purpose of your writing?
You can use ethos, pathos and logos in everyday arguments or discussions. You can also use them to meet new people or to tell a story verbally. You can use the facts in a discussion or use their emotions. I want to be in sales when I'm older and i will need to use all of these in order to have an effective sales pitch.
Delete1. In any argument, people are encouraged to use pathos, ethos, and logos to not only makke their argument credible, but also convincing. High School debate teams are taught these terms so they can include them in their debates and convince judges of their conclusions. The rhetorical appeals can be helpful during any instance when a point is trying to be proven.
Delete2. In any medium you publish, the purpose of your writing is the center, no matter the form. The important thing when writing with different mediums is contextualization. As long as the tone and purpose align, your readers will be able to understand the purpose of your writing.

1. How can you ensure that the reader will connect with your writing?
ReplyDelete2. What are effective ways to make your writing person?
1. When writing, what is you purpose? Do you share similar ideas with the authors from Chapter 2?
